Hector was the 4th child of Alexander Mackie (1856-1905) and Annie Grimshaw (1867-1960), although only he and his older sister Ruth survived past infancy.

On 12th July 1934 he married Phyllis Una Mansell (1906-2000) at Holy Trinity, Anglican, Dulwich Hill NSW. Their two children are still living, as are six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
